Bringing Awareness to Your Selfcare Practice

Selfcare has become so common that even my 6-year-old uses the phrase.   All the selfcare practices in the world won’t help you if you are not present and practicing that awareness in all aspects of your life.

Selfcare is a conscious act or practice that you do, just for you, to make you feel good.   It could be a daily yoga practice, 8 hours of sleep, a hot cup of coffee while you sit outside and just be one with nature.

This practice should be a priority not a luxury.  Without it, you will be left feeling overwhelmed and tired.  Unable to handle what life throws at you.  Selfcare should also encompass all areas of your body, mind and spirit, and practiced with awareness and mindfulness.

How can you bring awareness to your selfcare practice?

·       Spend time with yourself without distraction.  No cell phones, smart watches or tv

·       Be fully present in your selfcare practice.

If your practice is to sit outside with a hot cup of coffee or tea, use your 5 senses to completely appreciate and enjoy this time.  The feel of the mug in your hand. The warmth that it generates.  The smell of the coffee, the taste of the coffee.  Feel it in your body, how do these sensations feel in your body.  Sit with it.  Notice the space around you, what do you see? Hear? Smell?  Slow down and just take it all end.  Thoughts will come let them pass without attachment.  Feelings may arise, let them, sit with them until they pass without attachment.  Be fully present in this moment.

Next week we will discuss ways to incorporate selfcare practice for your physical body, your mind and spirit.
